Snow in Midsummer is a Chinese play written by Guan Hanqing about an injustice done to a girl
named Dou E. Everything that happens in the play is like a domino effect starting from when her
father was in debt and could not pay what he owed to Mrs. Cai so he sold his daughter to cancel
out the debt.
Guan Hanqing is a very well-known writer in China. He “holds a position similar to that of Shakespeare: a prolific writer during a pivotal historical era whose writings have been accorded unrivaled cultural status (Hanqing 501). His plays have his characters identify themselves a lot which creates a sense of drama.
Snow in Midsummer is Guan’s most admired zaju play. The play is about a girl who’s life is one whole misfortune. All of the events that occur after Dou E. is given away to Mistress Cai by her father, is people threatening to tattle tell and/or murder to get their way. Dou E was innocent and it was her fate to be unlucky as her life ended early from a false accusation.
